A curbed shower has a low threshold to step over and is the simpler, lower-cost build. A curbless (zero-threshold) shower is flush with the bathroom floor (sleeker, easier to enter, and ideal for aging in place), but it demands precise floor sloping and, often, a linear drain and recessed framing.

Waterproofing that lasts in a wet climate

Behind the tile we build a sloped pan, a bonded waterproofing membrane (sheet or liquid), and cement backer board, with waterproofed niches and seams. Done right, a curbless shower doesn't leak, the water reaches the drain, not the subfloor. In a region this damp, that hidden assembly is exactly where cheap showers fail.
