Building a custom home is the biggest project most families ever take on, and Gencon guides it from raw land to move-in day. As a family-owned builder working across Clackamas County, we handle lot evaluation, design, permitting, and construction with one team accountable start to finish.

The exterior of a modern custom home

What we handle, from lot to finish

  • Lot and land evaluation: slope, soils, access, utilities, and buildable area
  • Design-build architecture, so design and budget stay in sync
  • Site work and utilities, including septic and well on rural properties
  • Foundation-to-finish construction with one project lead
  • Permitting and land-use coordinated with Clackamas County
  • Interior finishes and fixtures selected with you, not for you

Building on your land

Many of our custom clients already own or are buying a lot, acreage in Canby, a hillside parcel in West Linn, or a wooded lot toward Sandy. Before any design work, we evaluate what the site will actually support: grade and retaining, soil and drainage, access, and where utilities have to come from. Rural lots often need a septic system and a well, which shape both the budget and the timeline.

Our design-build process

  • Feasibility: we confirm the lot is buildable and rough out scope and budget.
  • Design & budget: plans developed against a real number, not a wish.
  • Permitting: building and land-use permits pulled and managed.
  • Build: site work through final finish, with regular walkthroughs.
  • Handover & warranty: a finished home and a team that stands behind it.

Timeline and what drives cost

Custom homes vary too widely to quote by the square foot up front. Site conditions (slope, soils, and how far utilities have to run) often move the budget as much as your finish selections. As with all work here, Portland-metro projects tend to run 15–20% above national averages on labor and materials. A typical build runs roughly 12–18 months including design and permitting.

Frequently asked questions

Do you build on my lot, or do you have lots?
We build on your land. If you don't have a lot yet, we're glad to walk prospective parcels with you and flag the ones that will be expensive to build on before you buy.
Can you build on a rural or hillside property?
Yes, much of Clackamas County is exactly that. Rural lots typically need a septic system and a well, and hillside lots need retaining and careful foundation design. We factor both into feasibility.
How long does a custom home take?
Plan for roughly 12–18 months from the first design meeting to move-in, including design and county permitting. Site complexity and permit timelines are the biggest variables.
Do you do design-build, or can I bring my own architect?
Both. Our design-build approach keeps design and budget aligned, but if you already have an architect or plans, we're happy to build from them.
