Built for our wet climate
The National Wood Flooring Association recommends keeping indoor humidity between 30% and 50%; above about 60%, wood floors start to expand no matter the type. That's why material choice matters here. Fully waterproof SPC and luxury vinyl plank are the most worry-free option for our climate. Engineered hardwood is far more dimensionally stable than solid wood but isn't waterproof, so we keep it in climate-controlled, above-grade rooms, never a basement. Solid hardwood needs proper acclimation and humidity control to stay flat.
Subfloor prep is why floors last
A great floor is mostly about what's underneath it. We add a moisture-barrier underlayment with seams overlapped at least 8 inches and taped, so vapor from the subfloor can't reach the finish floor, and we level the substrate before a single plank goes down. Skipping that prep is why cheap installs cup, gap, and squeak within a year or two.

- For worry-free performance in our damp climate, waterproof luxury vinyl plank or SPC is the top pick. If you want real wood, engineered hardwood in climate-controlled rooms is the safer bet than solid. Tile is ideal for baths, mudrooms, and entries.
- Can I put hardwood in my basement?
- We don't recommend solid or engineered hardwood in a basement. It's below grade and prone to moisture. Waterproof LVP or SPC is the right call down there, and it looks like wood.
- Do you refinish existing hardwood, or only install new?
- Both. If your existing hardwood is structurally sound, refinishing it is cheaper and less disruptive than replacement. We'll assess whether it can be refinished before you spend on new flooring.
