Solid vs. engineered hardwood
Solid hardwood is a single piece of wood you can sand and refinish many times over decades, but it moves with humidity and needs careful acclimation and climate control. Engineered hardwood is real wood over a stable plywood core, so it resists the expansion and contraction that our wet-then-dry seasons cause. For most Clackamas County homes, engineered is the safer, more stable choice in living spaces; solid still shines where humidity is well controlled.

- For most homes here, engineered hardwood is the more stable choice given our humidity swings, and it still looks and feels like real wood. Solid hardwood is great in climate-controlled rooms and can be refinished more times over its life.
- Can hardwood go over a concrete slab?
- Engineered hardwood can, with the right moisture barrier and adhesive; solid hardwood generally can't be nailed to a slab without a subfloor system. We assess the slab's moisture first.
- How long does hardwood installation take?
- Beyond the install itself, we acclimate the wood in your home for several days first. Site-finished floors add time for sanding and finishing; prefinished floors are faster.
